Ouch...back pain
Did you know that 8 out of 10 people are affected by back pain? In fact, it is one of the leading causes of missed work days. As debilitating as back pain may seem, there are some simple steps to help you avoid it.
- Watch your posture: don't slouch when sitting or standing.
- Stretch before doing any strenuous activity.
- Wear comfortable low healed shoes.
- Sit in car seats and chairs with good lumbar support.
- Get up from the desk periodically to walk around and stretch.(those trips to the water cooler for a bit of gossip may be bad for the bottom line, but good for your back!)
- Lift with your legs, keeping your back straight.
- Avoid bending over without supporting your back.
- Try to control your weight.
- Quit smoking, as smoke decreases the blood flow to your lower spine and accelerates degeneration of your intervertebral discs.
Seeing a qualified chiropractor is certainly a wise option if you suffer from back pain. Chiropractic philosophy places a strong emphasis on your body's innate healing wisdom and far less reliance on drugs and surgery.
Due to their comprehensive training in musculoskeletal management, numerous sources of evidence have shown that chiropractic management is much safer, and less expensive, than allopathic medical treatments, particularly for low-back pain.
One such study, published in 1993, found that chiropractic management of low-back pain is superior to allopathic medical management in terms of safety, effectiveness, and cost, concluding:
"There would be highly significant cost savings if more management of LBP (low-back pain) was transferred from medical physicians to chiropractors."
